Beauty Basics: Tightlining

The Best Kept Secret in Makeup

Tightlining is something I talk about a lot. It's the best, most under-used makeup tip out there. It does so much for every face; every age and eye shape. It looks like everyone got a little more sleep and frames the face beautifully. I honestly want mine tattoo’d but I'm just too chicken! But I could because there isn't a look out there that I like better without tightline... I ALWAYS tightline my top waterline. I could go on and on! It really pulls your eye makeup look together, and it's actually an old cinema makeup trick. And Darlings, if it's good enough for Liz Taylor; it is good enough for the Unicorns.

But no joke, it makes your lashes look like they start from farther back so they look looooonger. And when it comes to lashes size does matter.

The 4-1-1

In short tightlining is the application of color to the waterline. My everyday look is to use a black liner on the upper waterline. Which like we've already talked about makes the lashes look longer and fuller. I will sometimes add a pop of color on the bottom waterline, or use a white to make the eyes look larger.

Here are some of my favorite products for Tightlining:

The Tips & The Tricks

#1. Firstly, and in the spirit of full disclosure; It tickles. Horribly. I warn every single person I do makeup on that it may just be the worst 12 seconds of their day.

#2. Look Down! When you're tightlining on your own eye put a mirror on your vanity or table and hover over it. Multitasking tip - you can also check to see that your nose is clear.

#3. Pull your lashes up (best to do this before mascara) and paint your waterline.

#4. Fill in any gaps in your lashes with the liner to make your lashes look super full.

#5. Try adding a pop of color on the lower waterline. I love a blue for blue eyes or a bright, rich purple for brown eyes. Or to open up your eyes, try a white liner.

That's it! Easy, right? Did you try it out? Tell us how it went in the comments!
